Globe Electric's Keystore International and
Joinluck Form Strategic Alliance, Begin Construction on New Factory in
China
Hong Kong
based Keystore International, a wholly owned subsidiary of leading
residential lighting and electric products manufacturer and distributor,
Globe Electric Company Inc., and Fujian Joinluck Electronic Enterprise Co.,
Ltd., today jointly announced the formation of a strategic alliance.
Joinluck will build a new facility to produce energy-saving compact
fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and light emitting diodes (LEDs).
Construction of a new 330,000 sq. ft. factory on 11 acres of land
will commence this spring in Fuzhou, Fujian, China. Completion of the
project is scheduled for late 2007.
“This new strategic alliance with Joinluck underlines the growing and
mutually successful relationship our two companies have enjoyed over many
years,” commented Edward Weinstein, President and CEO of Globe Electric
Company Inc. “The CFL and LED categories have become increasingly popular
with consumers throughout North America. Our customers, which range from the
largest big box stores to regional and national retailers, require the
assurance that we can accommodate this growing demand with a reliable supply
of quality products delivered in a timely manner. Globe’s global sourcing
strategy has been designed to provide just such guarantees.”
“Globe and Joinluck have developed a close partnership over the years. The
strategic alliance will bring this relationship even closer. Globe’s
strengths are in sales and marketing, while Joinluck’s strengths are in R &
D and manufacturing. The formation of the strategic alliance will increase
the competitiveness of both parties as a whole in the North American
market,” commented Lu Huang, Managing Director of Joinluck.
Ramping up for
increased energy conservation
The new
facility will increase CFL and LED manufacturing capacity by at least 50%.
The facility will also house enhanced research and development capabilities.
With the general trend toward energy
conservation, Globe’s line of compact fluorescent lighting is growing in
popularity. CFLs are far more energy efficient than traditional
incandescent bulbs, using approximately 70% less energy while producing the
same light output. A single CFL bulb lasts from 8,000 to 10,000 hours or up
to 10 years. Globe
works in close partnership with Energy Star, a government-backed program
helping businesses and individuals protect the environment through superior
energy efficiency.
LED technology
boasts even more energy saving features. They last 10 times longer than even
compact fluorescents, and over 100 times longer than typical incandescents.
Since LEDs do not have a filament, they are not damaged by jarring and
bumping. LED's also use a fraction of the wattage of incandescent bulbs.

Globe Introduces Ultra Mini Fluorescent Bulb
With Big Energy Savings:
- Uses 70% less energy than conventional bulbs
- Lasts six times longer
- Ideal one-for-one replacement of
standard household bulbs (requiring medium base)
Globe Electric Company Inc., a leading North
American manufacturer and distributor of lighting and electrical products,
today announced the introduction of the "Ultra Mini" soft white, a new
line of smaller Globe enersaverT compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL) that will change the way consumers see energy
efficient bulb replacements. "People who have
bought mini CFL bulbs in the past have encountered some fitting issues for
fixtures that require standard medium
base household bulbs," explained Raffi Baltayan, Product Manager at Globe
Electric. "The reduced size of the new Ultra Mini means that the bulb is
an easy one-for-one replacement of the standard household bulb anywhere in
the home. "The new Globe enersaverT bulb is Energy Star Approved and
warranted by Globe to last up to five years based on normal use (3-4 hours
per day). "Now consumers can replace all the standard bulbs
in a home with this new bulb, which
can help them save on excessive energy costs. Just replacing four bulbs
adds up to $136 in savings," commented Baltayan. The small size and
the big energy savings make the Ultra Mini Soft White the ideal energy
saving replacement for the standard incandescent bulb for indoor or
outdoor use.Baltayan adds that, despite the small size, the new
Ultra Mini packs a lot of light. The
9W CFL replaces a 40W standard household bulb and the 13W replaces the
60W, giving consumers more flexibility to choose where they want to use
them.

Globe Electric Subsidiary Keystore
International Strengthens Manufacturing Capability
- Two manufacturing facilities in China to produce
exclusive to Globe
- Increases Globe's flexibility and control of
production
- New Joint Venture takes effect March 1, 2005
Globe
Electric Company Inc., a leading North American manufacturer and
distributor of lighting and electrical products, announced that
effective March 1, 2005 it’s wholly-owned subsidiary Keystore
International Ltd. of Hong Kong is entering into a joint venture
partnership for two manufacturing facilities for lighting and electrical
products in China. This joint venture between Keystore and Asia Lighting
Solutions represents a major shift in strategy in how Globe will source
lighting and electrical products for its customers.
“We supply the
largest retailers in North America with lighting and electrical products and
this joint venture will further strengthen our relations with these
retailers,” said Edward Weinstein, President and CEO of Globe Electric
Company Inc. “By having control over these two manufacturing facilities, we
are in a much better position to satisfy our customers’ expectations for
product quality and availability.”
Keystore has
acquired two manufacturing facilities through this joint venture with Asia
Lighting Solutions: one in Shunde in Guangdong province, and the other in
Qingpu Shanghai. The Shunde facility, located in what is considered the
lighting product capital of China, will feature a showroom and will have the
ability to make smaller production runs, while the Qingpu facility is a much
larger operation that will cater to larger customer requirements. Both
facilities will manufacture Globe exclusive products.
“These two
facilities mesh perfectly with our strategy to have more effective control
over our ability to respond to all of our customers’ needs,” explained
Weinstein. “Increasingly, major retailers are looking for suppliers who can
give them customized products and programs in a timely and efficient
manner.”

Thank you for inquiring with Globe
with respect to the Underwriters Laboratories advisory concerning the
Globe 13 watt mini spiral compact fluorescent light bulbs.
Due to a production error that occurred in
the manufacturing of this bulb during 2002 and the first three months of
2003 by Fujian Joinluck Enterprise Co. Ltd., our manufacturing partner and
the leading manufacturer of compact fluorescent bulbs in China, a small
amount of product may have been produced with a non-compliant internal
component. In compliance with UL safety standards, this bulb is made with
a fire retardant plastic casing, which is designed to prevent the product
from igniting. However, a small short may cause a hole to melt through the
ballast of the bulb. The manufacturer has assured that the only bulbs
affected by this error are the 13 watt mini spiral compact fluorescent
bulbs manufactured from January 2002 through April 2003 bearing the

The date code is found on the
base of the bulb to the right of the Globe logo, as shown here.
Only those 13 watt mini spiral bulbs with the aforementioned date
codes may be defective. |
13 watt mini spiral bulbs bearing
the new Globe logo are NOT affected. |
Furthermore, only a small percentage of bulbs manufactured
during this period are affected, but it is impossible to detect the defect
by examining the surface of the bulb.
If you have 13 watt CFL bulbs in your home bearing one
of the above mentioned codes, please send us the date codes on your bulbs
and the quantity, along with your full name, street address and phone
number to 13wbulbrecall@globe-electric.com. We will gladly replace each
affected bulb with free bulbs. When UPS delivers these replacements, they
will pick up the bulbs you are returning, so please have them packaged and
ready for pick up.
We also would like to assure you
that our UL file is authentic, and is not fraudulent in any way. UL is
fully aware of the fact that the 13 watt mini spiral bulbs bears an
""unauthorized UL Mark". This is standard UL terminology whenever a
defective unit may have filtered onto the market. They are simply stating
that the units in question within that production range do not conform to
their standards, and hence they will not endorse the product in question.
If a product were in fact using a "pirated" or fraudulent UL marking, as
some media have portrayed, a statement would be issued immediately
identifying the culprit as being guilt of using a "counterfeit"
marking. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may has
caused. Rest assured that Globe stands behind all of its products and will
continue to do its utmost to ensure that all products distributed by
Globe meet the highest standards of safety and quality.
